After, and during the end of WWII, the world was profoundly shocked at the deceitfulness and power of Germany’s Nazi Party propaganda, the seemingly insane exaggerations, the outright falsehoods, but most of all, the disturbing acceptance of these behaviours as truth by the German people.
It’s essential for us first to remember that the deportation and slaughter of European Jews in the Holocaust didn’t all happen at once, or suddenly ‘out of the blue’ one day. It happened little by little, over a period of time. It took years of transition before the words turned into outright discrimination; before businesses were vandalized and destroyed, before the townspeople were forced into ghettos and poverty, before neighbours in the countrysides were removed – with the promise of a “better life” if they only got on the railcars to Auschwitz. This made the abductions socially acceptable. The rest of the world was left perplexed, and horrified just trying to make sense of the aftermath.
“How on earth could intelligent, rational people have been convinced that these were unobjectionable facts. How could they accept that these atrocities were standard, satisfactory behaviour?” or more basically, “How could the German people have let this horrifying genocide happen?”, “Why didn’t they stop it?!”
Inconveniently, the answer was simple: Propaganda.
Britannica lists the definition of propaganda as ‘the dissemination of information—facts, arguments, rumours, half-truths, or lies—to influence public opinion.’ This buzzword emerged from the WWII era, and it seems to have made a reappearance in today’s society, and in a major way.
We can all agree that it’s a lot easier to not repeat history when you know what you are looking for. So, let’s take a look at the 7 main types of propaganda that are commonly used in today’s society, and those of the not so distant past.
1. Bandwagon Propaganda
Human beings as a species have an innate desire to belong, or to fit in. This encompasses the ‘follow the herd’ mentality, and is all about persuading the target audience to take action, making something a prerequisite so that they can be apart of the ‘popular group’.
Examples in Retail Advertising: Will use the phrasing ‘Trending Now!’, ‘Join us Today!’, or ‘America’s favorite’! for their products or services. They want to make the consumer think that they are apart of something bigger than themselves.
Examples in Hitler Propaganda: Used throughout the late 1920’s and early 1930’s to boost Hitler’s image, and, as a result of this and other aspects, he became extremely popular. In various images, Hitler could be seen crowded around by a group of young men. Jews, communists, liberals, and democrats, became objects of hatred and scapegoats which could be made to suffer for the people’s distress. “Unity” was further encouraged by patriotic demonstrations. Typical in these are gigantic crowds of people, massed ranks of uniformed troops, bands playing patriotic and martial airs, voices declaiming from a hundred mechanical mouths, ecstatic marchers carrying flickering torches, their resinous smoke blending into the darkness, flags and swastikas everywhere. This is the National Socialist equivalent of “bread and circuses.” To bring all Germans upon the National Socialist band wagon, the party propagandists play continuously upon the common fears, hatreds, prejudices, aspirations and traditions. All propaganda devices culminate in this one. Not to get on the German fascist band wagon was the gravest heresy, tantamount to treason. This largely accounts for reports of nearly 100 percent “Yes” votes in all Nazi plebiscites.
Examples in Covid Propaganda: The media has become the not-so-silent voice of the Canadian Liberal government. The Liberal Party of Canada gives funding directly to the media to push their ideologies, and their opinions to the masses. Trudeau, in fact has publicly bragged about his ownership of Canadian media news outlets. News anchors, and world leaders alike are calling for aggression against the people who do not agree with their baseless claims, and for the concentration and detention of people who refuse to follow their communist policies. This has erupted a social degradation unlike one that Canadians have ever seen before. Unemployment is at an all time high. A shadow government has been erupted; and not getting on the Chinese Communist medical bandwagon is the gravest heresy, tantamount to treason. Social media has become a structured echo chamber, for those who have spoken up against the atrocities being committed by our government are actively being silenced or censored. By embracing this ‘cancel culture’ mantra, the media has successfully covered up scandal after scandal, even with valid evidence contrary to their claims. Removing these conservative voices and not allowing the individual to even acknowledge or explore that there even is another side to the story has resulted in mass acceptance of these ideologies. The result has made it nearly impossible to find the truth regarding certain scientific discoveries and medical treatments, unless it’s the truth they want you to know.
2. Card Stacking Propaganda
This involves the deliberate omission of facts to fool the target audience. The name originates from playing cards, and “stacking the deck in your favor”.
Typically, the misrepresentation of facts works in two ways. There is a rigorously enforced censorship, backed by an elaborate spy system and the constant threat of concentration camps. By this means the régime can suppress facts, prevent discussion and expression of discontent and opposition. By this means the regime also gains the freedom to give publicity to falsehoods.
Examples in Retail Advertising: concealing hidden charges, or only talking about certain benefits of their products or services, or in the case of fast food, highlighting the “low calorie” benefits of their fries over the competition’s, even though they are both very unhealthy for you.
Examples in Hitler Propaganda: There was a rigorously enforced censorship, backed by an elaborate spy system and the constant threat of concentration camps. By this means the régime could suppress facts, prevent discussion and expression of discontent and opposition. This largely accounts for the fact that many visitors on returning from Germany report that they heard no expression of discontent. On the other hand the régime then gained the freedom to give publicity to falsehoods. Similar Card Stacking techniques were utilized at the Olympic Games in Berlin and at the fifth centenary anniversary of Heidelberg University. In connection with the latter the celebrations were taken out of the hands of the regular university authorities. The foreign scholars who attended witnessed a series of National Socialist political speeches, stormtrooper parades, and demonstrations intended to show the German people that the scientific and educational world approved of the Nazi system. Nothing was said of the fact that the leading universities of the world, including three of the oldest— Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge—declined to attend. Nor was any publicity given to the letters sent by these universities, in which they declined the invitations and deplored the loss of academic freedom in the country which gave Lehrfreiheit to the world.
Examples in Covid Propaganda: There is a rigorously enforced censorship, backed by an elaborate spy system and the constant threat of isolation camps. By this means, Trudeau’s régime can suppress facts, prevent discussion and expression of discontent and opposition. This largely accounts for the fact that many people on social media report that they hear no expression of discontent towards the lockdowns. On the other hand the régime then gained the freedom to give publicity to falsehoods. Similar Card Stacking techniques are utilized daily with the Official Covid Updates in every Province in Canada. In relation to the science our government expert’s are using to determine the associated risks, these determinations were taken out of the hands of the regular scientists and doctors. The Canadian people who live in Canada have witnessed a series of Socialist-Communist-Dictatorial speeches, daily (if not hourly), Covid updates, Socialist political speeches, Facebook posts, Facebook ads, Twitter Posts, etc., and demonstrations intended to show the Canadian people that the scientific and educational world approved of the Great Reset plan that would ultimately result in a 2 class communist system. Nothing is allowed to be said of the fact that the leading scientists and doctors of the world decline to agree with their narrative. Nor is any publicity given to the letters sent by these doctors and scientists, in which they declined the conclusions and deplored the loss of academic freedom in the country which used to demonstrate freedom of speech and factual integrity to the world. Unemployment is at an all time high, yet the government says not to worry about financial aspects of life, for they (Trudeau’s Liberal Government) is going to swoop in and save us all by buying all of our assets out from underneath us, and implementing a communist ownership system. Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum once said, “you will own nothing, and you will be happy”. That wasn’t a joke unfortunately. He has money, so it won’t affect him. Who cares, right? The Conservative leadership is pushing for the vaccine to arrive. They drive the narrative as though Canadians “need the vaccine” to go back to normal, yet glaze over the fact that the vaccine is hurting people, and is largely untested long-term on humans. They also forget to mention that the testing methods they are using have been proven to be unreliable in multiple courts of law around the world.
3. Plain Folks Propaganda
This involves making the audience believe that regular people use their products, services, or ideas. This is meant to demonstrate that the product is for everybody, and will provide value to everyone.
Examples in Retail Advertising: Using “real” people in insurance advertising, or showing a “real person” using the product or service with ease. (They could also use a regular dad doing dishes using their sponge, because everybody can use it easily.) They can also use the “innocence angle” and show their product in a subliminally ‘positive light’.
Examples in Hitler Propaganda: Plain folk propaganda was a favorite tactic used by Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels to promote the war and to get more men to join the armed forces and the Hitler youth. Miriam Beard once said, “At the same time that the Führer is canonized, an attempt is made to transform him into a “man of the people.” In this, the propagandists are greatly assisted by his habits; for he wears ordinary clothes with no medals other than his simple Iron Cross, eats plain food and that sparingly, and leads a quiet, secluded life. He is pictured as a man of the people meeting plain Folks in their ordinary walks of life, enjoying with them their simple work and pleasures. But as previously indicated, Hitler wields an almost hypnotic power over an audience as he rushes excitedly through a speech. The simplest peasant and the most untutored servant girl feel that he is talking directly to them. As he speaks, they seem to relive with him his terrible war experiences and his poverty-stricken post-war days. Just as one of the most powerful appeals of the figure of Christ for the poor of all ages is his lowly origin and his expressions of sympathy for humble people, so the National Socialists attempt to capitalize on Hitler’s early career. Jesus, a carpenter, is the Messiah of the Christian world; Hitler, a house painter, is the savior of Germany. However, to judge by what Hitler has written in his book, Mein Kampf, he appears to have little sympathy but much contempt for the broad masses.”
Examples in Covid Propaganda: it started with the use of images and video footage of “real” people passing out in the streets of China, of masses of people needing to be medically tended to. After the virus arriving in Canada, “real” footage of ICU units were broadcast, and daily biographies on the individuals who had tested positive for covid were broadcast in an attempt to entice pity, and tug on the emotional heart strings. This gave justification to enforce their rules. This was step one of their plot, they just needed to know that we would follow orders without question before implementing the second part of their plan (vaccination). It’s been stressed that the elderly and the autoimmune compromised are all around us, and that we needed to bow down to their regulations to “save” these groups of people, without question. They tell us how we are to do that, and it involves an incredibly massive change in the way things are done in our daily lives, including while we are in our own homes. They tell us that we are attempting to kill other people around us if we didn’t bow down to their senseless regulation (that didn’t help do anything but intentionally destroy the economy and induce fear). They pounded the message “it’s for the good of everybody” into the collective subconscious, and demonized individuals who were pushed past their boundaries by the mandates, whether health or ethical beliefs being cites as the reasoning. Human rights violations have become a daily occurance, and yet are ignored by the Chinese-overseen UN human rights board at the federal level. All complaints regarding these new mandates are denied, regardless of the level of discrimination present. They justify these human rights violations in the name of a new virus, one that has not yet been isolated, or if it has – they have yet to show proof of to the public. People with medical exemptions are challenged at every corner. Neighbours have been paid to turn on eachother, for having members of their own families in their own homes [but, they didn’t really even require the monetary compensation to rat on each other, if we are all being honest]. The stage had already been set. The general rhetoric became, “If you can’t have Christmas with your family, why should your neighbor get to?!” This caused individuals to rival each other, and fight amongst each other, instead of focusing on the true root of the problem.
4. Testimonial Propaganda
This uses public figures or celebrities endorsing their products, services, or ideas. The audience is likely to take into account the popularity or credibility of that person. This establishes trust with their already existing client base, and boosts credibility.
Examples in Retail Advertising: Using a ‘dentist’ in a commercial to sell toothpaste, or a health professional to sell medications. This can also be used in combination with the “plain folk” method, for instance, by getting a farmer to testify about his new brand of truck, and how well it works on the farm for him.
Examples in Hitler Propaganda: Endorsement by celebrities, the rich and famous, people of influence and power. Hitler had a vast network of support from various dignitaries and world leaders. Doctors, medical professionals were told to support the Nazi ideologies, or they could lose their licenses, or worse, have their businesses destroyed as they had just seen happen to the Jews. If they were to step out of line, or speak out of narrative, their lives would be systematically destroyed. They had already seen what had happened to their Jewish counterparts, and didn’t want the same things done to them.
Examples in Covid Propaganda: using imagery, or broadcasting through radio, television, and social media, they have created the narrative that “you show that you care” about the people around you by wearing a mask, or by taking [buying] their vaccine. They bring it up as often as possible, in an attempt to testify it into being the “social norm”. They use government sponsored “experts” to give us their “medical recommendations” that often go completely against the logical recommendations and solutions. These “solutions” are meant to destabilize the economy, and are being directed by large organizations that have been infiltrated by the Chinese Communist Party like the World Health Organization, and the World Economic Forum. Officials have been coerced to push the Sustainability Goals on behalf of these organizations, which at their core can only result in the depopulation of the planet as their means of doing so. Media personalities on the mainstream media news television stations have taken it into their own hands to testify on behalf of the oligarchs from the shadows. “Anti-maskers/vaxxers”, patriots, republicans, conservatives, and science and medical professionals have become objects of hatred and scapegoats which can be made to suffer for the people’s distress. They are the cause of the sickness, the cause of the lockdowns, and the cause of the deaths from the virus; at least, that’s what the media would have us all believe. Unity is further encouraged by socialist/communist demonstrations of power (the forced masking). Perverting the idea that there are two sets of rules for the politicians and for the people, that staying home and tanking our economy is the way to solve all of our problems so that we can “reset”. This is done by corrupt politicians from behind screens to gigantic crowds of people, official press conferences, flags and foreign symbolism seeded into the background.
They’ve infiltrated the opposition party leaders, and have navigated them as controlled opposition, “guiding” the narrative under the guise of “inter party monologue”. This is the National “Liberal” Socialist equivalent of “bread and circuses.” To bring all Canadians upon the National Socialist band wagon, the party propagandists play continuously upon the common fears, hatreds, prejudices, aspirations and traditions. All propaganda devices culminate in this one. Not to get on the Liberal Socialist (communist) bandwagon calling for business closures, and “stopping the spread” is the gravest heresy, tantamount to social treason. This largely accounts for reports of nearly 100 percent “Yes” votes m all CBC plebiscites, which get most commonly shared through social media. The government testifies it’s narrative to the massed using messages like, “Make the right choice. Wear a mask.” and “Back to normal is up to you!” They use this testimonial propaganda often, consistently appearing through social media, television, radio, and physical signage in public spaces. What they really mean is, “Be compliant, this is a test. The next thing, you won’t have a choice for”, because we all know, that’s where they are going to make their real money anyways. The vaccines. The same concept being pushed by the Conservative leadership here as well. People are testing positive with a PCR Test while on their deathbeds already must mean that people are dying from the virus. That’s what our government “experts” and officials would have us believe.
5. Glittering Generalities Propaganda
This is using vague emotional appeal or vague statements to influence the audience. This makes the product look more appealing, resulting in better sales. Each individual consuming the message will interpret the message in a different way, and it will be the way that most directly relates to them. For better effect, brands may use hyperboles, metaphors or lyrical phrases to attract more attention. The slogan is so attractive, that the audience doesn’t question it’s true meaning.
Examples in Retail Advertising: Phrases like “inspiring you from within” or “to kick-start your day” to create positive anecdotes, or a fast food place using only descriptive words like “creamy, dreamy, chocolatey, heavenly.”
Examples in Hitler Propaganda: Phrases like “Adolf Hitler is Victory!” and “Open the door to freedom!” were popular.
Examples in Covid Propaganda: Phrases like “Stop the spread!” and “Love your neighbour”, or teaching children in schools that “Masks mean Love”, (somehow implying that if you do the opposite of what they want, you are spreading, or that you don’t love your neighbour). They do this especially with children. “Build back better” has become the general mantra of the countries that have signed on to participate in the great economic reset.
6. Name Calling Propaganda
Creating a negative image surrounding the competition. Appeals to the subject’s emotions of hate and fear.
Examples in Retail Advertising: A company that sells plant-based products may talk about how inhumane it is to kill animals. For this purpose, they may also criticize fast food chains businesses.
Examples in Hitler Propaganda: Harkening back to the days of Germany’s historical pride was a major theme of Nazi propaganda. In his speeches, Hitler shouted that Germany was once a great and powerful nation. And was in fact winning World War I, until weak politicians and cowardly generals gave up and surrendered their country to the Allies of Britain, France and Russia. Only the Nazis could make Germany great once again. Nazi propaganda often portrayed Jews as engaged in a conspiracy to provoke war. In visuals, a stereotyped Jew conspires behind the scenes to control the Allied powers, represented by the British, American, and Soviet flags. The caption reads, “Behind the enemy powers: the Jew.” Circa 1942. Hitler used the Jews as a Scapegoat to rally against. People who don’t look, think or pray like us. A particular race, religion, or faction who are the root cause of all the problems facing hard-working Germans. In Hitler’s case, this was the Jews and migrant Gypsies. Portray them as dangerous, criminal, and even sub-human. After all, who could trust such people? Why risk it? Better to round them all up and deport them! Intellectuals and journalists were suspected of being Socialists or even worse, Communists! So, Hitler’s plan was to discredit them as the “elites”, plant distrust with the populace in their own public universities, (the Press, even the judiciary) … until such time that he control them all behind the scenes, from within. Then they became his propaganda mouthpiece.
Examples in Covid Propaganda: using the phrase “conspiracy theorists”, or “anti-maskers” to label anyone who questions the government narrative. Barring them from businesses. Barring people who are exempt from being able to wear masks from being able to find employment. Firing professionals from jobs because they are questioning science in public forums. Giving people consequences such as not being allowed to shop in a store open to the general public because of a medical exemption preventing them from wearing a face mask, justifying locking these people out of businesses or refusing to provide them service under these conditions, barring businesses from being able to open and for people to make a livelihood, people being fired from their professional positions for speaking up about the science that directly opposes the official narrative. This further solidifies the aggressive narrative amongst Canadians towards individuals questioning the science, as they are led to believe by the media that these individuals are incorrect in their findings based on the resulting experts’ dismissal. They pound the message “it’s for the good of everybody” into the collective subconscious, and demonize individuals who were pushed past their boundaries by the mandates. Intellectuals and politicians are suspected of being Fascists. So, Trudeau’s plan was to discredit them as the “elites”, plant distrust with the populace in their own public universities, (the Press, even the judiciary) … until such time that he control them all behind the scenes, from within. The CBC became his propaganda mouthpiece.
7. Transfer Propaganda
Also known as association, this includes projecting certain qualities (praise or blame) of a person, ideology, or object, or value (an individual, group, organization, nation, patriotism, etc.) to another in order to make the second more acceptable or to discredit it. Linking those two ideas together as being the “total package”. It evokes an emotional response, which stimulates the target to identify with recognized authorities.
Examples in Advertising: Often highly visual, this technique often utilizes symbols superimposed over other visual images. For example, they could use a basketball player from the L.A. Heat, and use an image of him in tandem with a heating pad for back pain.
Examples in Hitler Propaganda: Repeat lies often enough and the people will believe they are true. Lie about people, parties, countries, even religions. Facts that do not support the narrative are deemed ‘Fake’ and even unpatriotic or subversive. Your opponents actions show they must hate their own country. The Nazis used book burnings with great success to demonize any ideas counter to that of the Third Reich. Hitler and Goebbels expertly used radio, movies, posters and pamphlets to flood Germany with their Facist message. Repetitive propaganda delivers a kind of feedback loop, each cycle reinforcing the one before. It tapped into the deep-seeded bigotry of the populace.
Examples in Covid Propaganda: Repeat lies often enough and the people will believe they are true. Wearing a mask means that you care about the people around you was heavily pushed by the media at first. This graduated to “The people who aren’t wearing a mask are outwardly defying the government, and are doing it for selfish reasons, even if they have an exemption.” This will later be a method used for vaccination distribution. Lie about people, parties, countries, and even religions. Facts that do not support the narrative are deemed ‘Fake’ and even unpatriotic or subversive. The right-leaning opponents actions show they must hate their own country. The Liberals and Big Tech implement censorship with great success to demonize and ideas counter to that of the Chinese government. Trudeau and the Conservatives use radio, movies, posters, and social media to flood Canadian media with their Communist message. Repetitive propaganda delivers a kind of feedback loop, each cycle reinforcing the one before. This taps into the deep-seeded bigotry of the populace.
8. Pander Propaganda
And lastly, this type of propaganda intentionally ignores intellectuals and reasonable arguments; and attempts to target unthinking masses with powerful emotional pitches. This is the money-maker. The real purpose is to make one set of individuals forget that certain other sets are humans too. Effective pander propaganda targets emotions. Once the message takes root, reason alone cannot counter its strength. This ideo runs parallel to the psychological question of “how many bad things it takes to outweigh a good thing.” Those in customer service have long since been sold the idea that a bad experience is more likely to be relayed to friends than a positive one. Turns out, it’s the same for psychological experiences and your brain, and that experience transfers to how we consume different types of media. “Bad emotions, bad parents, and bad feedback have more impact than good ones, and bad information is processed more thoroughly than good,” wrote four journal authors – Roy F. Baumeister, Ellen Bratslavsky, Catrin Finkenauer and Kathleen D. Vohs – in the article, Bad is Stronger Than Good. Pandering doesn’t not necessitate lying however, it uses verbiage to select an appeal to a specific audience. Typically this involves ignoring the elite, attacking the elite, or inventing an elite member to attack. Masses tend to hate, fear, and resent the ‘elite’, so they use this, sometimes referring to “them”. They accentuate the positive that will be given to them by making reference to the negative traits that oppose them.
Example in Hitler Propaganda: Adolf Hitler wrote in his book Mein Kampf. Vol. I, Chap. VI, par. 20 , “It must be addressed always and exclusively to the masses.” Jews, communists, liberals, and democrats, became objects of social hatred and scapegoats which could be made to suffer for the people’s distress. “Unity” of the elite was further encouraged by patriotic demonstrations. This largely accounts for reports of nearly 100 percent “Yes” votes m all Nazi plebiscites. “Smart candidates speak to hearts. Facts don’t bring people out of their chairs. Emotions do.” But first, Hitler appealed to the fears and hatreds of his constituency that felt they are being wronged or marginalized by the governmental powers that be. In Hitler’s case, he played upon the average Germans’ fear they were being ignored by their own failing government and industries. Remember, Germany too was in its own Great Depression following WWI. He marketed himself as the solution to all of their problems. Ethics, legitimacy and even religious decency would be able to be ‘Back-burnered’ for the greater cause, for a generation. So bigotry, racism, xenophobia and sexism were simply ‘an ends to a means’ for the Nazis. Put your Christian values aside. We all think bad thoughts in private, so why not mainstream them and shout it out loud? Or better yet, take to the streets and act upon them! The demagoguery and totalitarianism of Hitler was ultimately seen as acceptable. The goal was not to gain 100% of minds, but 100% of Emotions – so convince their hearts of his twisted vision, and the mind surrendered its logic.
Examples in Covid Propaganda: Scientists, medical professionals, and people who dared to question the official faulty science narrative are being targeted to become objects of social hatred and scapegoats which can be made to suffer for the people’s distress. “They are why we are locked down on house arrest” is the official driven narrative of the media and health officials alike. They make an example of these individuals. People advocating for the detainment of Canadians because they refuse to bow down to the faulty narrative without solid evidence and proof “deserve” to be detained, say the comments on social media. They are just being difficult, allegedly. Canadians are calling for their own businesses to be shut down, and for their own livelihoods to be destroyed, as long as it helps get rid of the virus! The problem with this is that the testing results can be controlled manually, so these mechanisms are used to drive fear into the masses simply by turning the dial up and down when they need that extra fear mongering-push. Facts are avoided, and emotions and feelings became the justification for the emergency measures, which coincidentally extended the government’s powers. But the people feel good about themselves… they’ve been led to believe that they are saving lives by following along with the controlled narrative. They keep this information quiet in the media, and push for more fear. The more fear the people are in, the more freedoms they can take away with justification, (and the less oversight they have over their spending). Ethics, legitimacy and even religious decency would be able to be ‘Back-burnered’ for the greater cause, for a generation. So discrimination is simply ‘an ends to a means’ for the Canadian government. Put your Christian values aside. We all think bad thoughts in private, so why not mainstream them and shout it out loud? Or better yet, take to the streets and act upon them! The demagoguery and totalitarianism of the Canadian government leaders is ultimately seen as acceptable. The goal is not to gain 100% of minds, but 100% of Emotions – so convince their hearts of your twisted vision, and the mind surrenders its logic.
These 8 types of propaganda support each other synergistically. Rarely, if ever, will any single principle appear in isolation. Now, obviously, these aren’t all of the examples available surrounding these areas, but I wanted to provide a small dose of what to be on the lookout for, as these methods are used in common advertising on a consistent basis, present day.
What lessons can we, as human beings, learn from all this real-life example? What does such a despicable time in history teach us a century later? Hitler was not the first, nor will he be the last despot this Earth will see. We accept the fact that seemingly good, rational and even religious people will sometimes blindly support evil, with a near cult-like belief that it is righteous. There is no need to call them names, for they have already named themselves with their words and actions. It is far more important to see this for what it is. Don’t be a sheep. Call it out now, and stop it in its tracks, lest we let History repeat itself … yet, again.
